The Last One (album) – CD
£10.00
'The Last One' is the second album from folk-rock singer-songwriter Gavin Chappell-Bates. This is a limited edition CD version of the album.
The album began life with one single thought:
What would you do if you were the last person alive when the world as we know it ends?
Gavin took this question and began to weave a musical story which became ‘The Last One’. It tells the tale of the cycle of life and what that means for a person, the human race, our planet and the wider universe.
Just like the cycle of life itself, the album shifts through a variety of themes, moods and sounds. It begins with the innocence of infancy and youth, as highlighted in first single ‘Lovely Day’ which explores a childlike wonder with the world in an acoustically driven, bouncing, folk-pop song.
The album then shifts into its darker and more ominous middle phase, just like those uncertain and questioning teenage years we all live through. This section includes the last single to be released – ‘Bad Faith / Good Faith’, an indie-dance-rock anthem inspired by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of ‘mauvaise foi’ (bad faith). It also features forthcoming single ‘Do What You Like’, a folk-rock stomper inspired by Gavin’s conversion to veganism which questions our relationship with animals and nature.
Before things get too serious, this section comes to a close with an outrageous tongue-in-cheek rock ’n’ roller – ‘The Last One’ – which assumes that the end of the human race will be the result of a zombie apocalypse!
The album comes to a close with its final section which resolves itself in an understanding and acceptance of ourselves and our place in the universe. The gentle and beautiful string-laden ‘The Sanctuary of Stars’ looks at our return home, to the stars, as stardust. The album then finishes with the life-affirming guitar rock of ‘This Is It’ which, after all the reflection of the album, confirms that all we can do is live our lives now, in this moment.
The album came to life thanks to a large number of fans who collectively crowd-funded its production and release. It was recorded by Bugs at Half-ton Studios (Lonely The Brave) and features an array of talented musicians including Booga (Ezio), Paul Richards (Fred’s House) and Neil Bruce (Bouquet of Dead Crows). It also features original art by Gavin’s wife, Ali Chappell-Bates.
