‘Do What You Like’ was one of the last songs written for my album ‘The Last One’. It came together very naturally as a song I felt I needed to write and include on the album.
As many of you will know, I converted to a plant-based diet a couple of years ago, having trialled vegetarianism for a year before that. Sully, my awesome cat (see the photos), was what tipped me over the edge.
I’d had nagging thoughts in the back of my mind for years and then driving home one day I heard a Jeremy Vine show on the radio about the ‘Croydon Cat Killers’. I was so angry how anyone could kill and harm animals.
And then it dawned on me that I did that very same thing, only someone else did the killing for me and the animals being killed were the ones we were told it was alright to sacrifice. When I got home and looked at Sully that was it and there was no going back.
‘Do What You Like’ comes from this and my growing awareness of animal welfare and conservation issues.
I hope that you will get something from the song and it may cause you to assess your, and our, relationship with animals and our planet.
